Choosing a water treatment chemical always starts with thorough information gathering and, where possible, a water analysis. To recommend a suitable chemical, we need to know the water temperature, the requirements set by the manufacturer, the water volume, possible contact with food, previous challenges and the goal to be achieved.
The usual problems are pH, corrosion, limescale and, in systems with cooler water, microbiological contamination. Experience shows that the risks associated with microbiological contamination and the heat transfer resistance caused by biofilm are underestimated. Biofilm (so-called “slime”) is a soft and slippery mass, but its effect on heat transfer is many times greater than that of limescale and/or rust.
In addition to inefficient operation of the cooling system, biofilm also poses a risk to human health. When favorable conditions coincide, biofilm can harbor, for example, Legionella pneumophila, which can cause pneumonia when it gets into the air with water droplets and is inhaled.
The chemical is chosen depending on whether there is one challenge or several and how the water has been treated beforehand. Both all-in-one and single-component chemicals are available.
To determine the dosing accuracy of chemicals, water analyses are carried out on an ongoing basis during use. For this, Miridon has a water laboratory capable of determining more than 20 different parameters. In addition, we carry out our own water tests – jar tests, filtration tests and flocculation tests.
