Bad tasting or smelling water

Signs of a water problem

  • Water with a rotten egg smell
  • Water that smells of chlorine
  • Bad tasting water

The smell and taste of water are affected by various substances dissolved in the water, gases and microorganisms. If you notice an unpleasant “rotten egg smell,” it most likely points to the presence of gaseous hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide often occurs in groundwater, where sulfur compounds break down under anaerobic conditions.

An unpleasant smell and taste can also be caused by microorganisms living in the water. When water stands for a long time in a well or pipework, microorganisms can start to grow in it, and the foul-smelling substances they release into the water change its properties. An unpleasant smell is not directly harmful to health, but it can make using the water unpleasant. Foul-smelling water may also indicate other contaminants in the water or other water quality problems.

Most hydrogen sulfide removal methods are based on oxidizing gaseous hydrogen sulfide into solid sulfur compounds, which can be filtered out of the water with filter units. In households where water consumption is low and the sulfur concentration is not high, the sulfur content can also be reduced significantly with iron removal filters.

It is important to consult specialists in the field in order to find out the exact cause of the unpleasant smell or taste and to find suitable solutions for improving water quality in your specific situation.

Note: to ensure efficient operation of water treatment equipment and optimal water quality, we recommend following the manufacturer’s instructions for installation, use and maintenance.

Water analysis

Open/close more info

Water analysis is the foundation of a reliable water treatment solution.

The journey to clean water starts with taking a water sample. Miridon's accredited water laboratory analyzes the composition of the water based on chemical and microbiological parameters to identify the sources of problems – whether excess iron, the causes of hardness or microorganisms.

We also offer a certified water sampler service.

Possible solutions

Based on your water analysis results, our sales team will help you choose the right equipment.

AC series

The chemical-free activated carbon unit is designed to improve the smell and taste properties of the water. The activated carbon filter removes the smell and taste of chlorine and, to a certain extent, organic substances dissolved in the water.

Particles of substances in the water are adsorbed onto the surface of the activated carbon filter media. During backwashing of the filter media, the activated carbon is loosened and the filtered sediment is flushed into the drain. No chemicals are needed to backwash the unit’s filter media. The unit works fully automatically, backwashing on a time basis. Under the standard program, backwashing takes place every three days.

AR series

The iron removal unit is designed to remove both dissolved iron (Fe2+) and precipitated iron (Fe3+) from the water. An AR-type unit also removes a certain amount of manganese and hydrogen sulfide.

The iron removal process involves oxidation of the dissolved iron and filtration of the resulting precipitate. During backwashing, the filtered iron sediment is flushed into the drain. The unit works fully automatically, starting regeneration on a time basis. Under the standard program, the unit backwashes every three days. To restore the working capacity of the filter media, a potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution is used during backwashing; the user must add potassium permanganate to the solution tank regularly. The installation site needs an electrical outlet and a drain connection.

BR series

The chemical-free iron removal unit is designed to remove both dissolved iron (Fe2+) and precipitated iron (Fe3+) from the water.

The iron removal process involves oxidation of the dissolved iron with atmospheric oxygen, precipitation and filtration of the precipitate into the filter media. The filter media together with air speeds up the oxidation of the iron dissolved in the water. The iron precipitate remains in the filter media and is flushed into the drain during its backwashing. No chemicals are needed to backwash the unit’s filter media. The unit works fully automatically, starting backwashing on a time basis. Under the standard program, the unit backwashes every three days. The installation site needs an electrical outlet and a drain connection.

UV units

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units are an effective way to purify and disinfect water, eliminating microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa without the need to use chemicals.

UV disinfection units use special UV lamps that emit short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation. These UV rays penetrate the water and affect microorganisms, destroying the structure of their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. Once a microorganism’s DNA is damaged, it loses its vitality and can no longer cause diseases or infections.

The effective UV radiation method is an environmentally friendly solution because no chemicals are used. UV radiation also does not affect the physical properties of the water, such as pH level or mineral content. The taste and odor of the water are preserved.

To ensure a sufficient radiation level and effective water purification in a UV disinfection system, it must be correctly installed and maintained. Regular lamp replacement and system checks are necessary. The installation site needs an electrical outlet.
