How to remove radionuclides from water?
Radium. Filtering out radium is technically possible, but the result is radioactive filter media, the handling of which is regulated under radiation and radioactive waste legislation. As an alternative, the radium content can be reduced noticeably with reverse osmosis units, in which case the wastewater produced as a by-product must be directed to the general sewer, where the necessary dilution is achieved.
Radon. Radon is a radioactive gas that is heavier than air and is removed from water by non-pressurized aeration. In this process, it is important that the resulting mixture of radon and air is directed out of the equipment and the room through special piping and forced ventilation, in order to ensure a safe working environment.

The content of radioactive substances in drinking water can be determined in Estonia in the following laboratories:

- Radiation Centre laboratory of the Environmental Board
