Description

Problem

Iron and hydrogen sulfide content.

Unit description

The iron removal unit is designed to remove both dissolved iron (Fe2+) and precipitated iron (Fe3+). An AR-type unit also removes a small amount of manganese and hydrogen sulfide. The unit consists of a vessel filled with filter media, a fully automatic controller that manages the filter’s operation and a potassium permanganate tank needed for backwashing the filter media. The filter medium is Greensand Plus, made specifically for water treatment. The unit is not suitable for a system with a biological wastewater treatment plant.

Operating principle

The iron removal process involves catalytic oxidation of the dissolved iron and filtration of the resulting precipitate. During backwashing, the filtered iron sediment is flushed into the drain. The unit works fully automatically, starting regenerations on a time basis. Under the standard program, the unit backwashes every three days. To restore the working capacity of the filter media, a potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution is used during backwashing; the user must add potassium permanganate to the solution tank regularly. The installation site needs an electrical outlet and a drain connection.
