In many regions of Estonia there are drinking water quality problems, which means the water has to be treated to meet the established requirements before use. Treatment processes require both water and energy. To ensure the sustainability of resources, limits have been set on the amount of water pumped from the ground. Unfortunately, clean drinking water is often used, for example, to water the garden or wash the car, for which alternatives exist.
In Estonia it rains for much of the year, but there are also drought periods when watering garden produce and the lawn is necessary. Although it is understandable that homeowners want to keep their lawns and plants vibrant, drinking water is not the most appropriate resource for such activities. Rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse offer sustainable solutions here.
An average family with children consumes about 15 m³ of water per calendar month, of which about 45% can be reused. This means that almost half of the drinking water used every day could find a second use.
Greywater, which arises from showering, handwashing, doing laundry and other everyday activities, has so far been a wasted resource. As a rule, such water ends up through the sewer in wastewater treatment plants, where energy and chemicals are spent to purify it sufficiently before it is returned to nature. In addition to greywater, condensate water from heat pumps and air conditioners can also be treated and reused.
