Microbiologically contaminated water

Signs of a water problem

  • Health problems
  • Unpleasant smell or taste
  • Cloudy water

The problem of microbiologically contaminated water mainly concerns owners of dug wells. Such contamination can result from sewage, surface water or contaminated sources getting into the groundwater, and as a result the water may contain large amounts of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Microbes in water can cause various health problems: gastrointestinal infections, diarrhea, vomiting, skin irritation and so on.

Contaminated water can have an unpleasant smell or taste, be cloudy and contain sediment caused by the activity of microorganisms. Sometimes microbiologically contaminated water can also have an unusual color – a greenish, brown or yellowish tint.

Various water treatment systems can be used to remove microorganisms: filtration, chemical disinfection, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet radiation.

Note: to ensure efficient operation of water treatment equipment and optimal water quality, we recommend following the manufacturer’s instructions for installation, use and maintenance.

Water analysis

Open/close more info

Water analysis is the foundation of a reliable water treatment solution.

The journey to clean water starts with taking a water sample. Miridon's accredited water laboratory analyzes the composition of the water based on chemical and microbiological parameters to identify the sources of problems – whether excess iron, the causes of hardness or microorganisms.

We also offer a certified water sampler service.

Possible solutions

Based on your water analysis results, our sales team will help you choose the right equipment.

Chemical disinfection

To ensure the safety of drinking water, the microorganisms found in the water (bacteria, viruses, protozoa) must be destroyed or inactivated. One such option is chemical disinfection.

Chemical disinfection methods usually involve one or more of the following substances:

  • Chlorine is mostly used in liquid form as sodium hypochlorite. Chlorine kills microorganisms by disrupting their cell structure and destroying essential enzymes.
  • Ozone is a highly active oxidizing agent that can be used to disinfect water. Ozone destroys microorganisms and quickly breaks down into oxygen in the water. Ozonation is an effective water treatment method, but it requires special equipment for producing and applying ozone.
  • Chlorine dioxide is a strong oxidizing agent whose fast and effective action makes it a popular choice in water treatment and drinking water disinfection, helping protect human health and maintain water quality. Correct and controlled use of chlorine dioxide is the key to ensuring the availability of clean drinking water in our daily lives.

The effectiveness of chemical disinfection can vary depending on the water quality, the choice of disinfectant, contact time and other factors. It is important to make sure that disinfectants are used at the correct concentration and that their residues are removed before the water is consumed. Incorrect dosing can reduce the effectiveness of disinfection, endanger water quality and have a negative effect on human health.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV)

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units are an effective way to purify and disinfect water, eliminating microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa without the need to use chemicals.

UV disinfection units use special UV lamps that emit short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation. These UV rays penetrate the water and affect microorganisms, destroying the structure of their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. Once a microorganism’s DNA is damaged, it loses its vitality and can no longer cause diseases or infections.

The effective UV radiation method is an environmentally friendly solution because no chemicals are used. UV radiation also does not affect the physical properties of the water, such as pH level or mineral content. The taste and odor of the water are preserved.

To ensure a sufficient radiation level and effective water purification in a UV disinfection system, it must be correctly installed and maintained. Regular lamp replacement and system checks are necessary. The installation site needs an electrical outlet.

Miridon’s range includes the following products:

  • Pallas UV 107
  • Pallas UV 403
  • Pallas UV 405
  • Pallas UV 412
  • Pallas UV 450
  • Pallas UV 480
  • Pallas UV 550

Reverse osmosis (RO):

Reverse osmosis is a water purification method based on membrane technology. It works by passing water through a special membrane that filters out microscopic contaminants such as salt, bacteria and heavy metals, leaving clean, clear drinking water. The purification system works without chemicals and leaves no residues harmful to health.

The biggest advantage of small reverse osmosis units is their compact size and easy installation. All small units come with the accessories needed for installation: connectors, hoses and a special stainless steel extra tap. The installation site needs an electrical outlet and a drain connection.
