Because radionuclides are carcinogenic, they pose a serious health risk with long-term consumption.<\/p><p>The Estonian drinking water regulation stipulates that the permitted indicative dose is up to 0.1 mSv per year. This means a person can consume 2 litres of such water every day without the radioactivity harming their health. Filtering out radium is technically possible, but the result is radioactive filter media, the handling of which is regulated under radiation and radioactive waste legislation. As an alternative, the radium content can be reduced noticeably with reverse osmosis units, in which case the wastewater produced as a by-product must be directed to the general sewer, where the necessary dilution is achieved.<\/p><p>Radon. Radon is a radioactive gas that is heavier than air and is removed from water by non-pressurized aeration. In this process, it is important that the resulting mixture of radon and air is directed out of the equipment and the room through special piping and forced ventilation, in order to ensure a safe working environment.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>Analysis and control<\/strong><\/p><p>The content of radioactive substances in drinking water can be determined in Estonia in the following laboratories:<\/p><ul><li>Nuclear spectroscopy laboratory of the University of Tartu Testing Centre<\/li><li>Radiation Centre laboratory of the Environmental Board<\/li><\/ul><p>Based on reliable analysis results, it is possible to choose the most suitable water treatment solution, which ensures water safety and compliance with the applicable standards.<\/p><p>Radionuclide removal solutions intended for business customers offer several important advantages. Second, the system helps protect against health risks, because the content of carcinogenic isotopes in the water is reduced.
